This Concurrent Resolution encourages Hawai'i County, working with the Puako community, the Department of Health (the state agency responsible for public health), and the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, among others, to finish the Puako Sewage Project. The project aims to protect and restore the Puako Reef, which has suffered significant coral loss due to pollution from cesspools, which are underground tanks that hold sewage. It also seeks to create a model for other communities in Hawai'i to upgrade or replace their cesspools, a major environmental and public health issue statewide, and to simultaneously install broadband internet infrastructure, helping to bridge the "digital divide" by providing better internet access in rural areas.
