This resolution urges the Department of Transportation and the Department of Transportation Services of the City and County of Honolulu to use artificial intelligence (AI), a technology that uses real-time data to optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve road safety, to address the significant increase in traffic fatalities and congestion in Hawaii, which has become the deadliest year for traffic deaths since 2007 and ranks among the most congested states nationally, leading to substantial wasted time and economic loss for drivers. The resolution also requests these departments to report to the Legislature on the feasibility of integrating AI into their existing traffic systems by submitting a report no later than twenty days before the start of the 2027 legislative session, and to send certified copies of this resolution to the directors of both departments.
