This resolution, passed by both the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives, honors the memory of Master Sergeant Roderick "Roddie" W. Edmonds, a United States Army soldier from Knoxville. During World War II, while a prisoner of war in Germany, Master Sergeant Edmonds displayed extraordinary courage and leadership when Nazi commanders ordered the segregation of Jewish-American prisoners for certain death. He refused to identify any Jewish prisoners, famously declaring to the Nazi commander, "We are all Jews here!" and ultimately saved the lives of over 200 fellow soldiers, an act for which he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, and recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, for his bravery in saving Jewish lives.
