This bill allows full-time firefighters employed by political subdivisions, such as cities or parishes, to participate in insurance programs offered by the state's Office of Group Benefits, provided the political subdivision chooses to offer these benefits. The bill clarifies that a "fire department" includes any local government entity whose main job is fighting fires. It also ensures that if a political subdivision elects to include these firefighters in the state's insurance programs, all full-time firefighters and retirees who participated under this new provision must be included as a group. Furthermore, firefighters will receive credit for prior health insurance coverage they had through their employer before the political subdivision joined the state's program, counting their continuous full-time service in the fire department up to the point the employer elected participation. This change is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
