Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to delaying the zero-emission school bus mandate

AI Summary

This bill amends existing education law to delay the mandate for school districts to transition to zero-emission school buses. Specifically, it pushes back the deadline for school districts to only purchase or lease zero-emission school buses from July 1, 2027, to July 1, 2032, and the deadline for them to only operate and maintain zero-emission school buses from July 1, 2035, to July 1, 2040. Zero-emission school buses are vehicles that produce no tailpipe emissions, such as electric buses. The bill also includes provisions for waivers of certain domestic sourcing requirements for these buses and their components if they are not available in sufficient quantity or quality, or if they would lead to unreasonable costs.
