This bill requires the State Board of Education to develop age-appropriate standards for teaching artificial intelligence (AI), which is technology that allows computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. These standards will cover fundamental AI concepts, how AI systems generate content, real-world uses of AI, and the economic, legal, and social implications of AI-generated information. Crucially, the instruction will also address the responsible and ethical use of AI, including topics like privacy, oversight, academic dishonesty, and how human biases can affect AI models. The bill suggests that this AI instruction can be integrated into existing computer science courses in middle and high schools. To support this initiative, $100,000 in recurring funds is appropriated to the Department of Public Instruction for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, to be distributed to public school units based on their student enrollment, and the act will take effect on July 1, 2026, applying to the subsequent school year.
