This resolution, passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Tennessee General Assembly, honors and congratulates the Overton Park Shell on its ninetieth anniversary, recognizing its significant contributions to the culture and history of Memphis and the state. Built in 1936 with support from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program aimed at creating jobs during the Great Depression, the Overton Park Shell is a rare surviving example of a WPA band shell and has served as a beloved open-air amphitheater. It has hosted a variety of performances throughout its history, including a pivotal early concert by Elvis Presley in 1954, which is considered by many music historians to be the first rock and roll show. Despite facing demolition plans in the 1960s, preservation efforts saved the venue, and subsequent community support and renovations, including a period as the Levitt Shell, have ensured its continued role in bringing free music to the public. The resolution expresses gratitude for its dedicated staff and supporters and wishes it continued success.
