This bill, known as the "Wildfire Response Modernization Act," directs the Secretary of the Air Force to purchase data and products from commercial space companies. This information will be used to help the Department of Defense and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM), which is responsible for military support in the northern part of North America, with their wildfire missions. The goal is to provide quick and effective military assistance to federal, state, local, and tribal governments to protect military readiness and installations, offer emergency support to civilian authorities, and actively manage wildland fires. The Secretary is also authorized to share this commercially acquired space-based data and products with state, local, and tribal governments to aid their firefighting efforts.
