AI Summary
This bill, the United States Leadership to Eradicate Obstetric Fistula Act of 2012, directs the President, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to create a 10-year strategy to combat obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury causing incontinence and social stigma, primarily affecting women in sub-Saharan Africa. The strategy aims to strengthen U.S. leadership in international women's health and empowerment by authorizing USAID to provide grants to U.S. university-based medical centers to prevent, treat, and monitor obstetric fistula. These centers will establish an International Obstetric Fistula Institute for Sub-Saharan Africa to serve as a hub for administration and medical training, oversee training for health professionals at designated Centers of Clinical Excellence for Obstetric Fistula Care (at least eight will be established), and create a United States Obstetric Fistula Treatment and Prevention Corps to provide volunteer medical services and train local healthcare workers. The bill also establishes a United States Advisory Committee for the Eradication of Obstetric Fistula to advise on these efforts.
