This bill, known as the Federal Wi-Net Act, mandates that the Administrator of General Services (GSA) implement widespread Wi-Fi and improved cellular coverage in federal buildings. Specifically, it requires the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots, which are areas providing public wireless internet access, in all new publicly accessible federal buildings. Additionally, the bill allows eligible wireless carriers to install wireless neutral host systems, which are small cellular base stations like femtocells or picocells designed to boost cellular signal and network capacity within buildings, upon request in any publicly accessible federal building. For existing federal buildings constructed before this Act becomes law, the GSA is directed to retrofit them with these technologies, with a deadline of December 31, 2015, ensuring the retrofitting process considers the importance of wireless communication for federal operations. Funding for these installations will be drawn from the Federal Buildings Fund.
