This Joint Resolution approves the renewal of import restrictions on products from Burma (also known as Myanmar) that were originally established by the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003. Specifically, it extends the President's authority to ban these imports for an additional three years, amending the original Act to change the duration from nine years to twelve years. This resolution is considered a "renewal resolution" and becomes effective either upon its enactment or on July 26, 2012, whichever comes first, continuing the United States' policy of imposing economic sanctions on Burma to promote democracy and human rights.
