This bill amends existing law to allow private attorneys who are appointed by the court to represent indigent individuals (people who cannot afford a lawyer) on a case-by-case basis to purchase health benefits. These attorneys will be able to buy into health plans offered under Chapter 32A of the General Laws, which typically covers state employees and retirees, but they will need to meet specific eligibility requirements and follow procedures set by the committee overseeing these benefits, and importantly, they will have to pay for these benefits themselves, meaning neither the committee nor the state government will incur any costs.
