This bill proposes to amend Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 90, Section 7U, which deals with vehicle equipment, by prohibiting the use and sale of any exhaust pipe that makes a vehicle, including motorcycles, louder than it was originally designed to be. Specifically, it mandates that all motorcycle exhaust pipes must not exceed a maximum noise level of 82 decibels (dBA), measured at a specific distance and angle from the exhaust outlet, and clarifies that measurements taken further away that exceed this limit are not considered valid. Violating these new decibel limits or illegally modifying an exhaust system could lead to a six-month suspension of a driver's license and/or a fine of up to $250.
