This bill allows for the creation of special license plates for firefighters, including active members, retired members in good standing, and immediate family members of firefighters who died in the line of duty, with these plates featuring a Maltese cross to signify their connection to the fire service. To obtain these plates, applicants must provide certification from their fire department chief, and there will be an additional $20 fee on top of the standard vehicle registration fee, with this money going to the Massachusetts Firefighters Academy Trust Fund and the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial Trust Fund. Furthermore, during a state of emergency, firefighters driving vehicles with these special plates will be permitted to travel on state highways, regardless of any general driving restrictions, to carry out their official duties.
