This bill proposes to create a new type of distinctive motor vehicle registration plate, featuring a design supporting affordable housing in Massachusetts, to generate additional funding for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Owners of private passenger vehicles can apply for these special plates, which will cost at least $40 more than the standard registration fee, with this additional amount collected at the time of registration and renewal. After covering the costs associated with producing these plates, the remaining funds will be deposited into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, a state fund dedicated to increasing the availability of affordable housing. The design of these plates will be decided by an advisory committee for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, in collaboration with and with approval from the registrar, who is responsible for issuing vehicle registrations.
