This bill, titled "To increase road safety," proposes to expand the items that are checked during a vehicle's annual safety inspection. Currently, vehicles are inspected for emissions and other safety components, but this legislation would add several more items to that list, including brakes, lights, steering and suspension systems, tires, and safety belts. It also introduces a new rule requiring a rejection certificate for vehicles with Light Truck (LT) or Passenger (P) tires, including spares, that are older than six years, as determined by the Tire Identification Number (TIN). The registrar, who is the official in charge of vehicle registration and inspections, may grant waivers for certain inspection requirements if it serves the public interest or is due to technological advancements, as long as public safety is not compromised. For new vehicles, the registrar can also require the initial inspection to occur at the end of their first full year of registration.
