This bill amends existing law to clarify when individuals convicted of certain crimes must submit DNA samples to the Department of the State Police. Specifically, it mandates that anyone convicted of an offense punishable by imprisonment in a state prison, or adjudicated a youthful offender for such an offense, must provide a DNA sample. Additionally, individuals convicted of offenses that allowed for any period of incarceration in a house of correction, regardless of whether they were actually sentenced to jail time, are also required to submit a sample. The bill specifies that these DNA samples must be submitted within one year of the conviction or adjudication, or before release from custody if the person is currently incarcerated, whichever comes first.
