This bill amends Section 520 of the Housing Act of 1949, which defines what areas qualify as "rural" for the purposes of that Act, by updating the census data used for these determinations and adjusting the population threshold. Specifically, it allows for the use of 1990, 2000, or 2010 decennial census data to classify an area as rural, and also states that any area already considered rural between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2010, will continue to be classified as such until data from the 2020 census is available. Additionally, the bill increases the population limit for an area to be considered rural from 25,000 to 35,000 people.
