This bill amends Section 2 of Chapter 209A of the General Laws to allow victims of abuse to file legal actions in specific courts, offering them more flexibility. Previously, such proceedings were heard in the superior, probate and family, or district courts based on the plaintiff's residence. This bill adds the option for a plaintiff to file in the court that had jurisdiction over their previous residence if they left to escape abuse, or in the court nearest a Family Justice Center if their current residence is within a county that offers such a center. A Family Justice Center is defined as a facility dedicated to providing services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, bringing together various service providers, community programs, and criminal justice professionals in one location to make accessing help easier for victims and their children.
