This bill, titled the Save Our Soldiers' Lungs Act, clarifies what types of waste are prohibited from being burned in open-air burn pits by the Department of Defense (DOD). It expands the definition of "covered waste" to explicitly include items such as tires, treated wood, batteries, plastics (unless only insignificant amounts remain after a good-faith effort to remove them), munitions, explosives, compressed gas cylinders (unless empty with valves removed), fuel containers (unless completely emptied), aerosol cans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), petroleum, oils, and lubricants (excluding waste fuel used for initial burning), asbestos, mercury, foam tent material, and any other item containing these materials. This action is intended to address health concerns for soldiers exposed to toxic fumes from burning various waste materials.
