This bill, titled the Medicare Data Access for Transparency and Accountability Act, amends the Social Security Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to make Medicare claims and payment data publicly available. This includes information on payments made to any service provider or supplier under Medicare, which is part of Title XVIII of the Social Security Act. The data will be accessible through a free, searchable online database that will list the amount paid to each provider, the services rendered, and their location, organized by specialty and searchable by service type. Importantly, the database will include a disclaimer stating that the data does not reflect the quality of services or providers, and each provider will be identified by a unique public identifier, such as the National Provider Identifier. This initiative aims to increase transparency in how Medicare funds are used and to whom they are paid, with data from fiscal year 2014 and subsequent years to be included.
