This bill, known as the Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Relief Act, aims to improve how certain small businesses owned by veterans are treated when competing for contracts with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Specifically, it modifies existing rules regarding contracting goals and preferences. The changes focus on the eligibility period for surviving spouses of veterans with service-connected disabilities. For surviving spouses of veterans who had a disability rated as 100 percent disabling or who died due to a service-connected disability, their eligibility for these preferences will now extend for 10 years after the veteran's death. For surviving spouses of veterans with a disability rated less than 100 percent who did not die from a service-connected disability, the eligibility period is reduced to three years after the veteran's death. These amendments are set to take effect 180 days after the bill is enacted and will apply to contracts awarded on or after that date.
