This bill, also known as the Unemployment Benefits Extension Act of 2013 or the Unemployed Jobhunters Protection and Assistance Act of 2013, extends the emergency unemployment compensation program by one year, from January 1, 2014, to January 1, 2015. The emergency unemployment compensation program provides additional weeks of unemployment benefits to individuals who have exhausted their regular state unemployment benefits, a measure often implemented during economic downturns to support those out of work. The bill also makes technical adjustments to the funding provisions of the program to accommodate this extension and states that these changes should be treated as if they were enacted as part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. Additionally, it expresses the sense of Congress that both the House of Representatives and the Senate should reconvene by December 18, 2013, to pass this legislation.
