This bill amends New Jersey's definition of "assault firearm" to strengthen the state's ban on these weapons. Specifically, it expands the definition to include semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines that have features like a folding or telescoping stock, a pistol grip, a thumbhole stock, a second handgrip, a bayonet mount, a flash suppressor, muzzle break, muzzle compensator, or a threaded barrel designed for these attachments, or a grenade launcher. It also includes semi-automatic shotguns with folding or telescoping stocks, thumbhole stocks, second handgrips, fixed magazines holding more than six rounds, or the ability to accept a detachable magazine. For semi-automatic pistols, the bill adds those with detachable magazines and features like a folding or telescoping stock, thumbhole stock, second handgrip, capacity to accept a magazine outside the pistol grip, a threaded barrel for accessories, a shroud that allows holding the firearm with the non-trigger hand without burning, a manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when unloaded, or those that are semi-automatic versions of automatic rifles, shotguns, or firearms. Additionally, the bill reduces the maximum fixed magazine capacity for semi-automatic rifles from 15 to seven rounds. The term "assault firearm" is a legal classification for certain types of firearms that are subject to stricter regulations.
