This bill mandates that various insurance providers and state programs, including the Group Insurance Commission (GIC), private insurers, hospital service plans, medical service agreements, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and MassHealth (referred to as "the division"), must provide coverage for medical and drug treatments to address body composition changes caused by HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome. This syndrome is a condition that can occur in individuals with HIV, often as a side effect of certain medications, leading to abnormal fat distribution. The bill specifically includes treatments like reconstructive surgery, such as liposuction (suction-assisted lipectomy), other restorative procedures, and dermal injections or fillers to correct facial fat loss. Importantly, these treatments must not be subject to higher deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, or out-of-pocket limits than other benefits offered by the respective insurer or program.
