This bill appropriates two million dollars ($2,000,000) from the general fund to the public education department for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 to fund after-school and summer programs that offer additional academic and enrichment learning opportunities for public school students, with any remaining funds reverting to the general fund at the end of fiscal year 2017. The public education department is tasked with creating criteria to give priority to programs that align with student success plans and common core state standards, provide academic enrichment, involve students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities, help students meet state standards in core subjects, promote physical activity and better student nutrition, and work with existing, effective community partnerships. Additionally, a portion of each award will be used for professional development for program staff, focusing on evaluating student outcomes and family satisfaction, and enhancing staff's ability to deliver high-quality STEM programming that effectively engages children and youth.
