Bill Summary

Homes for Heroes Act of 2015 (Sec. 2) Amends the Department of Housing and Urban Development Act to establish in the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) a Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs to: (1) ensure veterans fair access to HUD housing and homeless assistance programs, (2) coordinate all HUD programs and activities relating to veterans, and (3) serve as a HUD liaison with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Terminates, at the same time as such establishment, the position of Special Assistant for Veterans Programs in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Special Needs. (Sec. 3) Directs HUD and VA to report annually to Congress with respect to veterans homelessness and housing assistance.

AI Summary

This bill, the Homes for Heroes Act of 2015, aims to improve housing and homeless assistance for veterans by establishing a new position within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) called the Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs, who will report directly to the Secretary of HUD. This Special Assistant will be responsible for ensuring veterans have fair access to HUD's housing and homeless assistance programs, coordinating all HUD efforts related to veterans, and acting as a liaison between HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The bill also terminates a similar, but lower-level, position within HUD. Furthermore, HUD and the VA are required to submit annual reports to Congress detailing the extent of veterans' homelessness and the housing assistance provided to them, providing a more comprehensive overview of these issues.
