Bill Summary
Health insurance; mandated coverage for autism spectrum disorder. Requires health insurers, health care subscription plans, and health maintenance organizations to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder in individuals from age two through age 10. Currently, such coverage is required to be provided for individuals from age two through age six. The provision applies with respect to insurance policies, subscription contracts, and health care plans delivered, issued for delivery, reissued, or extended on or after January 1, 2016. The measure does not apply to policies, contracts, or plans issued in the individual market or the small group market, which effective January 1, 2016, will include employers with no more than 100 employees.
AI Summary
This bill expands mandated health insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, which is a developmental disorder affecting communication and behavior. Currently, insurance plans are required to cover diagnosis and treatment for individuals from age two through six, but this bill extends that coverage to age 10, effective January 1, 2016. This means that health insurers, health care subscription plans, and health maintenance organizations will be required to provide coverage for ASD diagnosis and treatment for a broader age range. The bill specifies that this extended coverage applies to policies and plans delivered, issued, or renewed on or after January 1, 2016. However, it's important to note that this expansion does not apply to insurance plans in the individual market or small group market, which, as of January 1, 2016, includes employers with up to 100 employees. The bill also clarifies that if an individual is receiving treatment for ASD and turns seven or older, coverage for their ongoing treatment will not be terminated solely due to their age exceeding the newly established limit.
