This bill amends existing law to clarify the value of geothermal energy for renewable energy certificates, which are used by electricity providers to demonstrate they are meeting renewable energy requirements, known as the renewable portfolio standard. Specifically, it establishes that 3,412 British thermal units (BTUs) of useful thermal energy from geothermal sources is equivalent to one kilowatt-hour (kWh) for the purpose of meeting these renewable energy standards. This change aims to better integrate geothermal energy into New Mexico's renewable energy framework.
