This bill amends existing New Mexico law to allow drivers to present proof of car insurance in an electronic format, such as on a smartphone, in addition to a printed copy. The Mandatory Financial Responsibility Act, which requires drivers to carry evidence of financial responsibility, is updated to include this electronic option. This means that law enforcement officers can accept digital images of insurance information displayed on portable electronic devices as valid proof of coverage, and drivers will not be convicted of a violation if they can show valid proof of insurance at the time of a citation, regardless of whether it's printed or electronic.
