This bill modifies the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program by allowing students unable to immediately accept an award after high school due to a full-time religious or service obligation of at least 18 months to begin their eligibility period upon completion of that obligation, provided it is documented. It also revises eligibility requirements for certain awards, specifically for the Florida Academic Scholars, Florida Medallion Scholars, and Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars awards, by requiring students to identify a social or civic issue or professional area of interest and develop a plan for personal involvement, and it prohibits students from receiving payment or academic credit for volunteer service work, with exceptions for service-learning courses. Additionally, the bill adjusts the required SAT/ACT scores for the Florida Academic Scholars and Florida Medallion Scholars awards for students graduating in 2013 and thereafter, and it clarifies the minimum hours of volunteer service required for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars award.
