This bill amends Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 171.085 to significantly extend the time period within which legal action can be taken for sexual assault cases. Previously, sexual assault was grouped with other felonies like theft and burglary, having a statute of limitations of 4 years, meaning charges had to be filed within four years of the offense. This bill removes sexual assault from that general category and establishes a new, much longer statute of limitations specifically for sexual assault, allowing for charges to be filed within 20 years after the commission of the offense. This change applies to sexual assaults committed both before and after October 1, 2015, provided the statute of limitations had not yet expired on that date for offenses committed prior to it.
