This bill mandates that health insurance policies, including those for state employees and retirees, individual accident and sickness insurance, group blanket or general accident and sickness insurance, hospital service plans, medical service agreements, and health maintenance contracts, must provide coverage for medically necessary treatments. These treatments include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, as well as care for any disease, illness, injury, or bodily dysfunction that is required by a student's individualized education program (IEP), individualized family service plan (IFSP), individualized service plan (ISP), or the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act. The bill aims to ensure that students with specific medical needs identified in their educational plans receive the necessary therapeutic services through their health insurance, without discrimination, and these provisions will apply to policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2011, with the act taking effect on January 1, 2016.
