This bill proposes to amend existing law to provide legal protection for probation officers and court officers employed by the Trial Court in Massachusetts. Specifically, if a lawsuit is filed against one of these officers for damages stemming from an alleged intentional wrongful act or a violation of civil rights under federal or state law, the Commonwealth will cover their legal representation. Furthermore, the Commonwealth will reimburse these officers for personal losses and expenses, including legal fees and costs, up to a maximum of one million dollars, as long as the alleged actions occurred within the scope of their official duties. However, this protection will not apply if the officer acted in a willful, wanton, or malicious manner.
