This bill nullifies the 2010 vote by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education that adopted the Common Core standards in English language arts and mathematics, meaning Massachusetts will no longer use these national education standards. Instead, the state will develop and use its own assessments based on its own curriculum frameworks as the standard for academic achievement. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is tasked with examining academic standards and updating the existing frameworks and the MCAS assessment, which is the state's standardized test. To aid in this process, the governor will appoint a special commission, chaired by the lieutenant governor, comprised of educators, teachers, administrators, school committee members, parents, and citizens, to provide input and help DESE create new standards for final approval by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
