This bill amends existing law to grant students who have been suspended or expelled for more than 10 school days the right to appeal that decision to the superintendent. The appeal process requires written notification to the superintendent within 5 calendar days of the suspension or expulsion, with an option for a 7-day extension. A hearing must be held within 3 school days of the appeal request, also with a potential 7-day extension, and the superintendent or their designee must make a good faith effort to include the student's parent or guardian. At the hearing, the student can present testimony and have legal counsel. The superintendent's written decision, which is final for the school district, must be issued within 5 calendar days of the hearing.
