This bill proposes to amend Chapter 71 of the General Laws by adding a new section that requires the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to develop a model curriculum focused on civic education. This curriculum would be integrated into existing history and/or social science classes and would cover topics such as the history of voting rights, the voter registration and election process, the structure and roles of the three branches and three levels of government, the history of political movements and current events, and civic service-learning projects. The department will also establish standards to assess this curriculum and then implement a pilot program in school districts.
