This bill mandates that insurance providers, including nonprofit health service plans and health maintenance organizations, must cover refills of prescription eye drops under health insurance policies issued or delivered in the commonwealth, provided the prescribing healthcare practitioner indicates the need for additional quantities on the original prescription, the refill request does not exceed the indicated amount, and the eye drops are a covered benefit. This coverage requirement applies to policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in the commonwealth on or after January 1, 2014, and aligns with guidance for early refills of topical ophthalmic products provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to Medicare Part D plan sponsors.
