This bill, concerning victims' rights, proposes to amend Chapter 228 of the General Laws by adding a new section that states if a criminal defendant who has been convicted of a crime dies, their right to appeal that conviction, or any pending appeal, will automatically end, and the conviction will stand unless it has already been overturned by a court. However, this change would not prevent the attorney general or a district attorney from taking action to cancel the conviction judgment against a deceased defendant if it is deemed to be in the interest of justice.
