This bill modifies the existing mandated reporter law, specifically Section 51A of Chapter 119 of the General Laws, which outlines the responsibilities of individuals legally obligated to report suspected child abuse or neglect. The key change is that a mandated reporter, such as a teacher or doctor, who has a reasonable belief that a child has suffered physical or emotional injury from abuse, neglect, drug dependence at birth, sexual exploitation, or is a victim of human trafficking, must now immediately report this suspicion to the department orally and follow up with a written report within 48 hours. Additionally, if a mandated reporter becomes aware of a sexually exploitative relationship between a child and another mandated reporter, they are also required to make an immediate oral report and a written report within 48 hours.
