This bill amends existing Massachusetts law regarding criminal offender record information to allow police departments to more thoroughly screen applicants for paid or volunteer positions. Specifically, it clarifies that a police department's duties include screening such applications and grants police departments the authority to require applicants to disclose all criminal offender record information at any point during the application process, without needing to inform the applicant of what information has been obtained unless a decision is made not to hire or allow them to volunteer based on that information. The bill also makes an exception for police departments from certain provisions of Chapter 151B of the General Laws, which generally governs fair employment practices and prohibits discrimination.
