This Resolution officially designates March 8-14, 2015, as "Illinois Groundwater Awareness Week" and calls upon Governor Rauner to issue a proclamation encouraging all Illinois residents to learn about the vital importance of groundwater, which is a crucial resource for over half of the state's population and essential for agriculture, ecosystems, and rural living, and to promote actions that protect and value this resource, especially by addressing the issue of abandoned wells, which are defined as unused or dilapidated wells that can contaminate aquifers and threaten public health and safety, and are required by law to be properly sealed.
