This bill proposes to amend the General Laws concerning ordinary disability retirements for public employees by adding a new provision that, upon acceptance by a retirement system, guarantees that a member retired for ordinary disability will receive a monthly payment no less than what a disabled individual with the same marital status and living situation would receive under the state's Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Acceptance of this provision by a retirement system requires a majority vote of its board, subject to approval by the relevant "legislative body," which is defined differently depending on the type of governmental entity (e.g., city council for a city, board of selectmen for a town). The state teachers' and state employees' retirement systems are automatically deemed to have accepted this provision.
