This bill proposes to amend existing Massachusetts General Laws, specifically Section 2 of Chapter 90, to allow veterans to receive special "VETERAN" license plates for their private passenger vehicles and motorcycles without paying the standard initial registration fee of $60 or any subsequent renewal fees. The registrar, who is responsible for vehicle registration, will issue these distinctive plates upon application and satisfactory proof of veteran status, as defined in another section of the law. While the initial and renewal fees are waived, there will be an annual $40 fee associated with these "VETERAN" plates, with the funds generated being directed to the Chelsea and Holyoke soldiers' homes, which are facilities for veterans. Importantly, for the purposes of this law, "motorcycles" will not include motorized bicycles.
