This bill amends Section 100 of Chapter 32 of the General Laws to expand survivor benefits for public emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, who are public employees providing emergency medical services. Specifically, it adds provisions that would qualify a public EMT's death for survivor benefits if it occurs while they are performing their duties and is a direct result of an assault, an accident while responding to or returning from an emergency, an accident involving an EMS department vehicle they are operating or riding in, or while at the scene of an emergency. The bill also inserts the term "public emergency medical technician" into various parts of the existing law, aligning their survivor benefit eligibility with that of police officers in similar circumstances.
