This bill authorizes the Department of Public Health to collect money from operators of nuclear power plants and electric companies that purchase power from specific nuclear facilities, like the Seabrook and Vermont Yankee plants, to cover the costs of the department's radiation control program. For the first year, the department can assess at least $400,000 per nuclear power plant, and in subsequent years, the total assessments will equal the prior year's radiation control program costs. Companies will be notified of their assessment and have 30 days to pay or submit objections, with the department able to refer unpaid assessments to the Department of Revenue for collection.
