This bill allows Patricia Kannler to purchase up to four years of creditable service for maternity leave she took before 1975, even though current rules might prevent this. Creditable service refers to time that counts towards retirement benefits. To purchase this service, Ms. Kannler must pay the Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement Board an amount equal to the retirement deductions that would have been taken if she had continued working, plus interest. If she retires before finishing these payments, her retirement benefit will be recalculated to include the maternity leave as creditable service once the payments are complete, and this recalculation will apply retroactively to her original retirement date. This measure is declared an emergency law to ensure these employment benefits can be provided immediately.
