This bill allows cities and towns to require automatic sprinkler systems in new one and two-family homes if the municipality chooses to adopt this provision. Specifically, any newly built residential building with up to two dwelling units will need to have a complete automatic sprinkler system installed according to the state building code, for any building permit issued one year after the town or city accepts this law. The head of the local fire department will be responsible for enforcing these sprinkler requirements, and individuals who disagree with a decision made by the fire department head can appeal to a board of appeals within 45 days. Additionally, the bill clarifies that the seasonal shut-off of these newly required sprinkler systems is permitted, as long as it follows procedures set by the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations, which will also define what constitutes a seasonal shut-off.
