This bill authorizes the city of New Bedford to create "Senior Citizen Safety Zones," which are designated areas near facilities serving seniors, such as housing, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or community centers where senior activities regularly occur. Within these zones, New Bedford can implement measures to reduce vehicle speeds, including lowering speed limits to no less than 20 miles per hour, installing traffic signals or signs, and restriping roadways, all under the direction of the city's Traffic Engineer. The city must inform the State Traffic Engineer when these zones are established and when speed reductions are made on local roads, but these provisions do not apply to state highways or major arterial roads.
