This bill authorizes the town of Norfolk to allow Fire Chief Coleman Bushnell to continue serving in his position beyond the typical age limits or other restrictions imposed by civil service law, which governs public employment and retirement. Specifically, Chief Bushnell can continue his service until March 28, 2022, or until he retires or is removed by the Board of Selectmen, as long as he remains mentally and physically capable of performing his duties. The town's Board of Selectmen can require him to undergo an examination by a physician to confirm his capability, at the town's expense. Importantly, no further deductions will be made from his salary for retirement contributions under Chapter 32 of the General Laws after he reaches age 65, and upon retirement, he will receive a retirement allowance based on what he would have been entitled to had he retired on his original retirement date. This measure received local approval and takes effect upon its passage.
